Teachers and therapists
Do you teach and support children with special educational needs (SEN) and their families? If so, I’m sure you’ll relate to and draw on my experience with my granddaughter Siena, and the new learning aid it’s led to, to help the children you work with.
Increase children’s confidence and communication skills
That’s why I created these books, with plans for more as I continue through the full range of animals, activities, food and other objects that are important to children. Each book is an effective, easy-to-use way to quickly increase children’s communication skills.
Endorsed by speech and language therapists
When you help a child with special educational needs, you’ll find that what worked for Siena is endorsed by your peers – I worked closely with NHS Speech and Language Therapists and incorporated their recommendations. In particular, Laura Yard of the NHS and Signalong® who were exceptionally supportive as I fine-tuned the book.
Four proven communication aids
Each book combines four proven teaching and communication aids:
- The word
- A full-colour photograph
- A symbol
- A sign and a description of how to do the sign
Children benefit from hearing the voice of their ‘communication partner’ as they say the word and demonstrate the sign on each page. It’s the key to experiencing – and learning – how to communicate about each object in five different ways. From pets and wild animals to favourite snacks and drinks, you’ll love seeing how children respond as they learn how to communicate their interests and wants.
Because most SEN children find it hard to sit for long, I made the book more functional with a simple tent-like back cover that extends to support the pages as you turn them on their spiral binding. This makes the book easy to use during functional activities and days out. It also makes it easy to work with more than one child at a time.
Making learning easy for you and your children
When you see and try the book, I’m confident you’ll appreciate why other professionals who’ve seen it love the concept. I’m also sure that you’ll ‘get’ the idea at once – and how it makes it so easy for children to hear an object’s name and see the word alongside a photograph, symbol and sign.
We believe you’ll understand this is an effective, low-cost way to give children extra support alongside the spoken word. It’s also valuable for facilitating learning, understanding of new vocabulary and sharing quality time with a special child.
